In my opinion the most accurate and realistic courtroom drama on film or television is Anatomy of a Murder (1959) It is the story of a defendant, in a murder trial, that claims he suffered temporary insanity after the victim raped his wife. Jimmy Stewart plays a humble, small town defense attorney and George C. Scott plays an attorney with the state attorney general's office helping the district attorney prosecute the case. Perhaps the most masterful stroke as far as casting goes was the casting of Joseph Welch as the judge. Welch was an experienced and renowned lawyer in real life. (he was the attorney that confronted Joseph McCarthy during the McCarthy Hearings in the 1950s with famous line "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?")
If you want to see how a courtroom battle really takes place where nothing is all black or all white, take a few hours some Saturday afternoon and watch this film.
